Double success for Williams as they take the constructors and drivers championships in both Formula One and British Touring Cars.

Williams, along with McLaren and Tyrrell agree to sign the concorde agreement.

At Imola Heinz-Harald Frentzen wins his first grand prix explaining that it “is like oil on my soul”.

During the summer Jacques Villeneuve gets in trouble with the FIA for describing the new rules as ‘shit’.

At Monza BMW confirms that it is returning to F1 with Williams from 2000 onwards. It was also announced that BMW and Williams were to collaborate on a Le Mans project.

Michael Schumacher blots his copy book at the European Grand Prix as he tries to punt Jacques Villeneuve out of the race – Villeneuve continues and wins the championship.

At the beginning of the year rumours surface about a joint Le Mans venture between Williams and BMW which are denied. However, come September, there is a formal announcement made that BMW will be entering the 1988 Le Mans with a car designed by Williams.
